Inspire Group CEO, Dan Tohill, interviews Inspire Group Auckland Regional Manager Aidan Stoate on the topic of coaching and how it's so important during these uncertain times. As we are all adjusting to the new normal of working from home, Aidan and Dan explore how coaching conversations can be extremely helpful in assisting people to make meaning of their situation.

In this episode we cover:

  • a definition of coaching
  • how coaching can help within these uncertain times
  • discomfort, tension and trust in coaching.

An effective coaching conversation can feel uncomfortable. For both the coach and the individual being coached. If we look at it within an organisational context and leader as coach, often there is a really strong impulse for leaders to interject with a solution or apply some form of mentoring within the coaching situation, especially if the coach has some advice or guidance in the area. So coaches need to manage their impulse to jump in and solve the situation for their counterpart.

A coach needs to think about what they bring to the interaction. An effective coaching conversation is totally focussed on the person being coached, it's not about you achieving your goals or your objectives but it is about you being an enabler for somebody else to achieve those for themselves. A lot of leaders want to solve problems for people and make life easier for people. Sometimes a coaching conversation is not what needs to be had.

Everyone is now dealing with a significant amount of uncertainty and ambiguity and it is okay. Within a coaching context, coaching can be an effective way to help people manage that ambiguity and uncertainty. I would encourage regular conversations, continue to communicate with your team, your community, with your family. Once we do return to some form of normality, let's think of the principles that allowed us to get through this time and use them and apply them on a larger scale. It is important to be able to look forward and acknowledge the good things that are happening at the moment.
